University of Minnesota and Minneapolis police departments responded to instances of thefts and shots fired around campus this week.
UMPD Chief Matt Clark said as the temperatures drop and people begin staying inside more, fewer crimes tend to occur, resulting in a quiet week for crime around campus.
On Tuesday, a suspect attempted the theft of a truck at the 30 block of Williams Avenue Southeast in Prospect Park at 10:00 a.m. He used a screwdriver to start the ignition and stole a bolt cutter from the truck before fleeing the scene on foot. Two witnesses photographed the suspect in the truck who had been arrested prior for other crimes, according to a Minneapolis Police Department report.
MPD responded to gunshots Thursday on the corner of Cedar Avenue South and Washington Avenue South, near the University’s West Bank campus. The shots were fired at 12:40 a.m. The suspects remain unknown and were gone on arrival. A MPD report states that the weapon discharged was a handgun.
A theft at the 3000 block of University Avenue southeast was reported to MPD Thursday at around 5:00 p.m. The suspect was gone on arrival. Additionally, a car was stolen from the street outside the 1700 block of Rollins Avenue Southeast in Como sometime between 11:00 p.m. Wednesday and 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to a MPD report, a suspect stole a moped from a garage at on the 1000 block of 14th Avenue Southeast sometime between noon Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
According to University of Minnesota Police data, campus police responded to six thefts this week.
