.McCarville joined Louisiana State’s consensus national player of the year Seimone Augustus and eight other players on the team. The selections were announced at the Final Four in Indianapolis.
Lindsay Whalen joined McCarville on the All-America team last year, making the Gophers the only team with more than one All-American player.
This year, the only other Big Ten player selected was Ohio State sophomore Jessica Davenport.
While McCarville and Augustus were the only underclassmen on the team last year, this year there were five seniors, three juniors, a sophomore and a freshman.
Goligoski on INCH team
Minnesota men’s hockey freshman Alex Goligoski was named to the Inside College Hockey’s all-rookie team Saturday.
The defenseman had five goals and 15 assists in 32 games to rank second among Gophers blueliners this season.
Goligoski has also been named to the WCHA all-rookie team, ranking ninth in the conference in rookie scoring.
Wisconsin forward Joe Pavelski was the only other WCHA rookie to make the INCH team.
Lucia a Penrose finalist
Men’s hockey coach Don Lucia was selected Friday as one of nine finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the top coach in Division I men’s college hockey.
Lucia guided the Gophers to a third-place finish in the WCHA and currently has them in the NCAA Frozen Four. Minnesota takes on North Dakota in the national semifinals Thursday.
The other finalists include Denver’s George Gwozdecky, North Dakota’s Dave Hakstol and Colorado College’s Scott Owens.
To be a finalist, a coach has to either win a conference coach of the year honor or take his team to the Frozen Four.
Lucia won the 1994 Penrose Award while at Colorado College.
Trials go swimmingly
Seven Minnesota men’s swimmers are competing at the World Swimming Championships Trials that run through Wednesday in Indianapolis.
On Friday, the first day of competition, Gophers senior Justin Mortimer took third place in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing just more than three seconds behind Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. Mortimer then finished fifth in the 400 individual medley.
In the 200 free Saturday, Mortimer was 10th, senior Terry Silkaitis was 13th and senior Sean McCaffrey was 24th. David Plummer took 11th in the 200 backstroke.
Gophers women’s swimmers Katherine Wind, Bridget McCoy and Kate Hardt are also competing in the trials.
Kansas beats soccer 2-0
Minnesota’s soccer team lost 2-0 to Kansas on Saturday at the Jayhawks Soccer Complex in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Jayhawks opened the scoring in the 63rd minute on a goal by Afton Sauer. Kansas scored again in the 84th minute.
The Gophers’ next action is the Alumni Game on April 16.
