Minnesota’s softball team won four of five games at the Buzz Classic in Atlanta, but fell to Radford during the first elimination round Sunday.
The Gophers (8-9) gave up an RBI single to Shelby Richard in the top of the seventh inning Sunday for the game-winning run. Freshman Briana Hassett took the loss for Minnesota.
On Saturday Minnesota defeated Eastern Michigan by a score of 3-1 and Dartmouth 9-0 in five innings in its round-robin pool play. Rene Konderik and Hassett picked up the wins Saturday.
The Gophers opened the tournament Friday with a pair of wins over Syracuse and Winthrop. Minnesota topped the Orange by a score of 2-1 and beat Winthrop 9-8. Hassett got the win against Syracuse and Konderik pitched three innings for the win against the Eagles.
The Gophers will compete again next weekend when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., for the Jayhawk Classic.
Women’s tennis swept
Minnesota’s women’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches this weekend in Louisville, Ky.
The Gophers (3-7) lost 6-1 to Louisville on Sunday. Nischela Reddy was on the winning end of two matches on Sunday for Minnesota, topping Maria Klokotzy in three sets in the singles portion of the match, and winning with her doubles partner Ida Malmberg at No. 1 doubles.
On Saturday Minnesota dropped a 6-1 decision to South Alabama. The Gophers were swept in the doubles portion of play and scored a singles win from Malmberg.
Next weekend, Minnesota will compete against Florida International in Miami.
Men open Big Ten season
Minnesota’s men’s tennis team opened its Big Ten schedule with a 4-3 win over Iowa on Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa.
The 38th-ranked Gophers (4-7, 1-0 Big Ten) received singles wins from 49th-ranked D.J. Geatz, as well as Adrien Debreyne, Raoul Schwark and Sion Wilkins. Although they dropped the doubles point, they picked up a win from the doubles team of Schwark and Debreyne.
Minnesota will go back to its nonconference slate next weekend when they play Rice on March 11 in Dallas.
