Former University employee Jennifer Joan May remained in jail Thursday despite a $100,000 bail set Wednesday by Hennepin County District Court Judge Robert Blaeser.
Blaeser set the bail on the condition that May have no contact with University employees or property.
May’s attorney, George Ludcke, said his client is unemployed and cannot afford the 10 percent down payment required for a bail bond.
Ludcke said he will seek a psychological examination for May to confirm that she is not violent and to have her bail reduced.
According to a police complaint, May admitted she took a gun to University President Nils Hasselmo’s office June 11.
Witnesses say May pointed the gun at several of Hasselmo’s staff members and fired a shot into the ceiling of the Morrill Hall office.
May was charged with four counts of second-degree assault Tuesday — one count for each person in the office at the time of the incident.
She did not enter a plea at an arraignment hearing Wednesday. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for July 19.
May, a secretary in the chemistry department from 1987 to 1991, left the University after unsuccessfully filing sexual harassment charges in 1991 against the academic chairman for the chemistry department, W. Ronald Gentry.
The charges were dismissed by the University’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action later that year.
Gentry said in a written statement Monday that he and May had a mutual and consensual relationship prior to her charges of sexual harassment against him.
May was estranged from her husband and Gentry was separated from his wife at the time.
