Bronson La’Cassie added his name to a list of prestigious golfers this weekend by winning the 104th Western Amateur in Benton Harbor, Mich.
The senior on the Minnesota men’s golf team joined the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson and Jack Nicklaus as winners of the tournament, when he defeated Pablo Martin, a junior at Oklahoma State, 2 and 1 in the championship match Sunday.
La’Cassie advanced from the four-round stroke play portion of the tournament into the round of 16 by shooting even par, 10 shots behind leader Won Joon Lee.
In the round of 16, La’Cassie defeated fellow Australian Tim Stewart in a lopsided 6 and 5 affair. He cruised through the quarterfinals with another 6 and 5 victory, this time over Dustin Johnson.
Using a 3 and 1 victory over Dawie Van der Waalt in the semifinals, La’Cassie advanced to the finals against Martin – whom he was paired with in the third round of this year’s NCAA Championships.
