Mee stars in midweek 11-inning win for Gophers baseball team against Northern Iowa

Minnesota’s baseball team defeated Northern Iowa 7-3 in 11 innings Wednesday in Waterloo, Iowa.

Junior Gophers first baseman Mike Mee hit a bases-clearing bases-loaded double in the top of the 11th to give Minnesota a 6-3 lead. Catcher Kevin Carlson drove in the seventh and final run of the game later in the inning, scoring Mee.

Sophomore right-hander Gary Perinar pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

After falling behind 2-0 on single Panthers runs in the second and third innings, both charged to starter Kyle Carr, the Gophers evened the score at 2 with two in the top of the fourth. Mee and junior outfielder Kyle Baran scored on a two-out wild pitch by Northern Iowa’s Aaron Jenkins.

The Panthers retook the lead with an RBI double by designated hitter Clayton Daniels in the bottom of the sixth. Minnesota tied the game in the top of the eighth when junior outfielder Sean Kommerstad scored on an error.

Minnesota will play its second Big Ten series of the season this weekend with a four-game series at Iowa, beginning Friday.
