The Minneapolis Police Department began an investigation into the disappearance of University senior Chris Jenkins on Monday.
An official missing person’s report was filed with the Minneapolis police. Jenkins has been missing since Thursday evening.
Cyndi Barrington, public information officer for the department, said police were following possible leads regarding Jenkins’ disappearance.
“We don’t have reason to suspect foul play,” Barrington said, adding that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to suggest criminal activity.
Jenkins’ family and friends have developed an organized search effort with the help of hundreds of volunteers.
Chris Larson, Jenkins’ lacrosse coach and a main organizer in the search effort, said he estimated 400 people have volunteered to search for Jenkins since Sunday.
The family has set up a phone number that people can call with information about the case: (612) 333-4646 or (612) 804-9460. Although they have received calls, the family says there have been no substantial leads.
Terese McCabe, a longtime friend of the Jenkins’ family, said “There’s tips coming in all the time.”
She said the family is using several sources in their search, including four psychics from across the country.
Christian Bailey, co-captain of the lacrosse team and close friend of Jenkins’, said he has talked to people in shelters downtown who think they’ve seen Jenkins, but little has come of it.
“People said that he looked familiar, but Ö a lot of people said, ‘Oh, he’s been on the news, hasn’t he?’ so I think we put up so many posters, and we saturated this area so much that it made some people seem like they’ve seen him before,” Bailey said.
University Police Lieutenant Charles Miner said missing student incidents are “very rare.”
Miner said in the past three years, every student who has been reported missing with the University Police was eventually accounted for, including two students in 1999-2000 and one each in the last two years.
