The University of Minnesota Athletics Department has ended its relationship WCCO radio and will move broadcasts of Gopher football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s hockey to three new stations starting later this year.
Beginning in the 2011-12 athletic season, Clear Channel’s KFAN, AM 1130 (simulcast on KTLK, 100.3 FM) will be the home of Gopher football, while basketball and hockey will now be aired on Hubbard Broacasting’s ESPN, AM 1500.
In an announcement Wednesday, University Athletic Director Joel Maturi thanked WCCO for an “outstanding run” and for their “dedicated coverage,” but said that the new partnerships “represent the best overall platforms for Gophers sports on radio.”
In addition to broadcasting games, the new stations will each rollout their own scheduled Gopher sports programming. KFAN will host a one-hour weekly coaches show with new football head coach Jerry Kill and likewise, ESPN will be hosting shows with men’s basketball head coach Tubby Smith, women’s basketball coach Pam Borton and men’s hockey coach Don Lucia.
Clear Channel already has plans to market its new partnership with the football team through billboards and social media.
