Minnesota’s softball team went 4-1 in the Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas, this weekend.
The Gophers (9-7) played Texas A&M-Corpus Christi once each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Prairie View A&M once each on Saturday and Sunday.
Minnesota beat Corpus Christi 2-1 on Friday, lost 2-1 the next day and beat them again 1-0 in eight innings on Sunday. Versus the Prairie View, the Gophers took a pair of 4-2 and 5-4 decisions.
On Sunday, Megan Higginbotham’s game-winning RBI in the top of the ninth gave Minnesota the win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Piper Marten pitched a two-hitter.
In the earlier game, first baseman Valerie Alston’s two RBIs helped the Gophers to a 5-4 win in eight innings.
Baseball loses to Miami
Minnesota’s baseball team lost 9-2 to No. 4 Miami (Fla.) Sunday night in Coral Gables, Fla.
Catcher Gary Dick hit a two-run home run to supply the Gophers’ offense in the loss.
Baseball 1-2 in tourney
The team also lost 19-7 to No. 10 Notre Dame on Sunday morning, finishing 1-2 in the Diamond Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., this weekend.
It was their first intercollegiate competition of the season.
The 25th-ranked Gophers beat Winthrop 7-4 on Saturday and lost to Florida Atlantic 4-2 on Friday. Notre Dame won the tournament, beating all three teams.
On Sunday, Minnesota jumped out to an early lead, and held a 6-4 advantage in the top of the fifth inning.
Notre Dame tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the inning, and ripped off seven runs in the bottom of the sixth on its way to a 19-7 victory.
