Unfortunately, sometimes covering a large, urban campus means covering crimes much more serious than bike and backpack thefts. This year, the Daily’s police reporters followed several major cases through the justice system. Jennifer Joan May, who fired a gun in the office of University President Nils Hasselmo, was sentenced to seven years probation in March. Louis Cardona “Butch”Buggs, was convicted in February of the murder of University student Kami Talley, who was shot at her workplace in early 1996. The prosecution of four burglary and criminal sexual conduct suspects in an off-campus break-in has continued throughout 1997. Victor Porter pleaded guilty to one count of burglary. Puiassance Andersen was convicted on several counts of burglary and robbery but acquitted of criminal sexual conduct charges. Giezwa Andersen and Antonio Burton (not pictured) await trial.
