SomaliaâÄôs newly elected president will speak at Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota on Sunday to discuss the countryâÄôs humanitarian crisis that has displaced millions of Somalis over the past two decades. President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh AhmedâÄôs visit will mark the first time a Somali president has come to Minnesota. Ahmed is also expected to speak out against Al-Shabaab âÄî a rebel group believed to be responsible for recruiting dozens of Somali men from the Twin Cities to fight in Somalia. Junior sociology and African and African-American studies, Mustafa Jumale said he is excited to meet the president on Saturday. âÄúI canâÄôt wait to meet him and ask him questions concerning Somali issues,âÄù Jumale said. The plan to visit Minneapolis came after Ahmed attended the United Nations General Assembly last week. He has already visited other parts of the United States with large Somali populations including Washington D.C. and Columbus, Ohio. Doors will open to the public at 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
