After two weeks of competing unattached, it looks like the Minnesota wrestling team was ready to debut as a team. The Gophers opened their 2008-09 season with dominant dual meet victories Saturday against Portland State, Northern Colorado and North Dakota State at the Northern Quad in Rochester. Actually, dominant may be an understatement. Minnesota began the day by blanking the Vikings 54-0, thanks to pins in seven of its 10 matches. Redshirt freshman Sonny Yohn made the quickest work of Portland State in his only appearance of the day, pinning Brady Garner in 29 seconds at the 184-pound weight class. The only chink in the Gophers 42-4 victory against Northern Colorado was a 12-0 major decision by the BearsâÄô Mitchell Polkowske over MinnesotaâÄôs Joe Grygelko at 149. Sophomore Ben Berhow, redshirt freshman David Zilverburg and junior All-American Jayson Ness recorded pins at 285, 141 and 133 pounds, respectively. Ness rounded out his day of nothing-but-pins by sticking North Dakota StateâÄôs Tyler Steinwand in just 2:22 during the GophersâÄô 35-6 drubbing of the Bison. Junior Chris McPhail and sophomore Joe Nord notched quick pins as well. Six Minnesota wrestlers went 3-0 on the day, while sophomore Mike Thorn, last weekâÄôs Big Ten Player of the Week, recorded two victories to move to 11-0 on the season.
