After this weekend’s men’s swimming and diving team meet at Iowa, the question isn’t who did well. It’s hard to find a Gopher who didn’t do well.

Senior All-American Adam Mitchell led the Gophers to a 224-66 win over the Hawkeyes by taking first place in three individual events while three other Gophers won two events each.

“I believe Adam could have won any race,” coach Dennis Dale said. “That may be going a little far, but he is a potent threat in every single event.”

Minnesota set the tone from the opening event, the 200-yard butterfly, with Mitchell finishing first, followed by teammates Adam Weis in second, Evan Bernier in third and Zach Wood in fourth.

It was a trend that continued.

Sophomore All-American David Plummer led the way in the 100 and 200 backstroke events, where the Gophers swept the top four spots.

Plummer won both events. In the 200, Russ Payne finished second, Mike Woodson in third and Dan Berve fourth. The 100 saw a reversal with Berve second, Woodson third and Payne fourth.

“With him and Adam Mitchell we feel we have a great one-two punch in the backstroke,” Dale said. “In fact, we have a great one-two-three-four punch when you throw in Woodson and Berve.”

The Gophers have arguably their toughest Big Ten opponent coming up this weekend as they play host to Indiana.

Indiana took second place at last year’s Big Ten Championship and dominated the diving competitions.

But that’s nothing new.

What is new is that the Gophers are among the Big Ten’s top diving teams, according to Dale.

But the early season matchup against conference rival Hoosiers will be just another meet.

“They may have some revenge on their mind, and that’s fine. That’s their game plan,” Dale said. “We look at it as

Indiana this week, then North Carolina. They are all big meets.”

But the Gophers swimmers are looking at it a bit differently, hoping to set the tone against their top conference foe.

“We aren’t treating it like it’s just any other meet,” Plummer said. “These are the guys in the Big Ten that are going to be there at the end of the year. We aren’t taking anything for granted.”

Women also top Iowa

The 23rd-ranked Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team won 169-131 at Iowa this weekend.

The Gophers opened the night with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay and followed it up with a couple of first-place finishes.

Yuen Kobayashi took first place for the Gophers in the 1,000-yard freestyle, followed by a 200-free win for Meredith McCarthy. Kobayashi went on to win a second event in the 500 free.
