Following the suspension of six University of Michigan fraternities and sororities on vandalism allegations, the school's student body president created a task force Sunday to develop a campus honor code, TheDetroit News reports.
Three weeks ago, 120 members of the school’s greek community held a wild party at a northern Michigan ski resort, destroying furniture, bashing ceiling tiles and leaving trash strewn on urine-stained carpets, the Detroit Free Press reports, causing $100,000 in damages spread over 53 rooms.
In the days after police escorted the students from the property, the chapters involved have offered apologies and damage payments. The resort owner and area residents want charges to be filed.
The school’s Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association presidents issued a joint apology following media coverage of the damages, promising to hold those responsible accountable, The Detroit News reports.
Bobby Dishell, the school’s student government president, said the new task force will encourage students to hold themselves to higher standards. The proposed code would help govern academic integrity and personal behavior, he said.
"How can we hold ourselves accountable if there's no one standard to hold everyone to? There's no one standard that exists here,” Dishell told The Detroit News.
