Gophers men's track and field alumni Hassan Mead ran the world's second-fastest 5,000-meter run time in 2014 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday.
Mead ran a time of 13:02.80, placing second in the race to Ben True of Saucony by six-hundreths of a second.
Mead graduated from Minnesota in 2012 and now runs for Nike Otc Elite in Eugene, Ore.
Current Gophers senior John Simons ran in the second section of the 5,000-meter run at the meet and placed eighth at 13:39.11. This time ranks second all-time for the Gophers behind only Mead, who ran 13:28.45 in 2009.
