.Benjamin Rosenblum, 23, of Minneapolis said he didn’t see the blow coming when he stood outside Sgt. Preston’s early Saturday morning.

“I guess they punched me in the back of the head and I was unconscious immediately,” he said. “I was hanging out with my friends and I woke up in the hospital.”

Daryl Baumann, the bouncer that night, said he wasn’t sure what was going on when he walked outside to find Rosenblum on the pavement.

“I walk outside the bar and there’s some guy on his stomach, bleeding out of his mouth,” he said.

Once Baumann saw the suspect, who police said is a 26-year-old man, he told the suspect, “OK buddy, let’s go this way.

“And then he gets all combative, and we had to chase him down,” Baumann said.

Micah Blake was bartending that night. He said during the melee, the suspect kicked him.

“I’ve seen some pretty bad stuff before. It’s nothing new; it’s tough-guy talk,” he said. “But that guy was the bloodiest I’ve ever seen.”

Rosenblum came away with a concussion and several stitches.

“My face is kind of mangled,” he said.

Precinct Two Acting Cmdr. Greg Reinhardt said officers tazed the man several times when they arrived at the scene. The suspect had a felony warrant and was charged with assault.

There was a strong visual indication that the Minneapolis man was “very intoxicated,” according to Reinhardt.

He said a total of eight officers, including some from the University police force, were on the scene.

Jarisa Johnson, manager of the bar, said there was a big crowd that night after the Minnesota Twins game, but there was no indication of animosity inside the bar.

Lone male robbed early Sunday morning

A 33-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint Sunday morning near the intersection of Fifth Street Southeast and Sixth Avenue Southeast.

The man, who lives near the University community and requested anonymity, said after having some drinks with friends at Nye’s Polonaise, he decided to walk home rather than take a taxi.

While walking, a suspect put a gun to his head and demanded everything he had.

“It was a pretty garden-variety robbery,” he said. “The whole thing happened inside five seconds.”

He gave the man his wallet, which had $40 and some credit cards in it.

“You just don’t think about that happening over here,” he said. “It’s pretty intimidating though. I hope never to go through that sort of thing again.”

Minneapolis police said there are some similarities with two robberies that occurred last week, but there have been no solid connections or leads in any of the cases.

Deputy Chief of University Police Steve Johnson advised students to walk in groups and stay in lit areas whenever possible at night.

“(People) are in denial that it’s never going to happen to them. A robbery can happen to anyone,” he said.

The victim said he will exercise more caution in the future.

“You leave the bar at 2:30 in the morning, probably in retrospect I should have taken a cab or bike,” he said.
