Junior forward Trevor Mbakwe was arrested Monday for violating a restraining order filed in by his former girlfriend in 2009.
Mbakwe was released on bail Monday evening, but the case is being investigated by St. Paul policeâÄôs Family Sexual Violence Unit.
âÄúWe are aware of the charges that have been filed against Trevor,âÄù Minnesota Athletic Director Joel Maturi said in a statement released by the University Monday night. âÄúUntil we know all of the facts surrounding the charges it would be premature for us to have any further comment.âÄù
According to MondayâÄôs incident report, St. Paul police arrested Mbakwe in Minneapolis âÄúfor Violation of a Harassment Restraining Order.âÄù Mbakwe allegedly left a post on the womanâÄôs Facebook page that violated a âÄúno contact order report,âÄù the incident report said.
The woman petitioned for the restraining order on June 29, 2009, according to a report by the Star Tribune.
Mbakwe, a junior transfer, missed last season due to an assault charge in Miami when he played for Miami Dade College. Mbakwe had to perform 100 hours of community service as a result of the charge.
Mbakwe leads the Big Ten in rebounding (10.4 per game) and field-goal percentage (59.7 percent) in his first season with the Gophers. He’s also tied with guard Blake Hoffarber as the Gophers’ leading scorer with 13.4 points per game.
The Gophers were already playing thin after a season-ending injury to Maurice Walker and Devoe Joseph’s decision to leave the program.
The Gophers host No. 8 Purdue on Thursday at 6 p.m. No announcement has been made on MbakweâÄôs status for the game.
