On Monday, former Utah guard Both Gach announced his decision to transfer to the University of Minnesota and join the men’s basketball team. Gach chose the Gophers over Auburn, Creighton, Iowa State and Maryland.
A native of Austin, Minnnesota, Gach was Utah’s second leading scorer last season, averaging 10.7 points per game. His 2019-20 campaign included a 19-point performance against Minnesota.
Listed officially at 6-feet, 6-inches, Gach provides length in the back court and could play a similar role to that of Amir Coffey, who earned third team All-Conference honors for Minnesota in 2018-19.
Gach has two years of eligibility remaining and will seek a waiver from the NCAA to become immediately eligible to play in 2020-21. Between Gach and Drake transfer Liam Robbins, who joined Minnesota earlier in the spring, the Gophers now have two players who figure to see significant minutes next season if their waivers are granted.
With the addition of Gach, the Gophers have no remaining scholarships available, meaning their roster for next year is likely complete. However, another scholarship will open up if guard Marcus Carr decides not to withdraw his name from the NBA Draft.
