After finishing second in the Big Ten last year, the womenâÄôs swimming and diving team came into this season ready to show their competition they meant business. The Gophers did just that, notching two big wins over Michigan and Michigan State last weekend in their season opener on the road. Garnering national attention after their successful weekend, the Gophers are preparing to open the season at home âÄî hosting Iowa State on Saturday at the University Aquatic Center. âÄúWe went into Michigan expecting to do well and we did, so I think the attention they are receiving isnâÄôt unexpected,âÄù head coach Kelly Kremer said. While Minnesota has two meets under its belt, this will be the season opener for Iowa State, which finished fifth in the Big 12 last year. âÄúI know they like our pool,âÄù Kremer said. âÄúThey are probably very excited to come in and compete against us. And thatâÄôs good. We want to swim teams that are excited to race and dive against us.âÄù Jumping out to a 2-0 record wasnâÄôt the only reason for the Gophers to celebrate this week. Senior Jillian Tyler was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, picking up the teamâÄôs first conference accolade of the season. Tyler clocked a NCAA-qualifying time âÄî and first place âÄî in the 100 breaststroke, while taking first-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and the 400 medley relay against Michigan and Michigan State. âÄúItâÄôs always nice when a Minnesota student-athlete receives an award for the team,âÄù Kremer said. âÄúI think a lot of times Minnesota is under the radar of a lot of people, and maybe we are starting to creep up on the radar for some, and I think thatâÄôs exciting. He added: âÄúI think it will just help [the team] keep their motivation and their momentum.âÄù
