Florida International University transfer guard Malik Smith has moved a step closer to gaining immediate eligibility this upcoming season for the Gophers after the NCAA released its annual APR report.
Transfer athletes normally have to sit out a year after they transfer, but they're sometimes allowed to compete right away if the school the athlete transferred from is banned from the postseason.
FIU received a one-year postseason ban for posting an APR score of 858, below the 900 cutoff, and thus is banned from the upcoming postseason. The Gophers have filed a waiver that would allow Smith to play this season.
Smith averaged 14.1 points last season and served as a three-point marksman for his FIU squad.
The Gophers athletics program received passing marks in every sport on campus.
