ItâÄôs been a busy couple of weeks for Minnesota Athletics Director Joel Maturi. Not only did he re-sign Minnesota womenâÄôs basketball coach Pam Borton to a six-year contract extension, he extended his stay at the University for a while as well. The University officially announced Thursday a two-year extension to be tacked onto MaturiâÄôs contract, which otherwise would have ended in 2009. This keeps the 63-year-old Maturi with Minnesota through the 2011-12 school year. âÄúI’m excited about the future of Gopher Athletics,âÄù Maturi said. âÄúWe’ve had some challenging years with tight budgets. But we’ve been able to stay competitive on the playing fields, make progress in the classroom and maintain the level of integrity Minnesotans expect.âÄù Maturi will receive a $30,000 salary increase from the contract he signed in 2006, making his annual salary $345,000 starting Jan. 1, 2009. Maturi has been kept busy since the 2006 extension, with the fundraising for and building of the new TCF Bank Stadium along with the hiring of head football coach Tim Brewster and head menâÄôs basketball coach Tubby Smith. University President Bob Bruininks praised Maturi in the official release. âÄúWith the opening of TCF Bank Stadium next year, this is an exciting time for Golden Gopher athletics and we’re pleased Joel Maturi will be leading our team for two more years,âÄù Bruininks said. âÄúHe’s led high-profile, important searches for new football and men’s basketball coaches, signed our women’s basketball coach for another six years and been a real champion for all 25 of our athletics programs.âÄù And on MaturiâÄôs to-do-list in his next few years with the Gophers: A new baseball stadium, something head baseball coach John Anderson has been seeking for quite some time. âÄúThe good news is,âÄù Maturi told the Star Tribune, âÄúwe are preparing to go out and raise money [for a ballpark] relatively soon.âÄù
