Kim Kardashian “Parisian Heist” costume crosses the line

Over the weekend, I came across a Halloween costume online that crossed the line. Titled the “Parisian Heist,” the costume was intended to mimic Kim Kardashian during the now infamous robbery in France, where she was held captive and robbed of 10 million dollars of jewelry. The costume featured a short white robe, big fake sunglasses, a wig and a gag.

There’s no question that this costume is in poor taste. It pokes fun at what is probably the most terrifying moment of the woman’s life, diminishing the gravity of the situation and reducing it to a cheap joke. But what made this online costume provider think that their “Parisian Heist” outfit would be a success?

There exists a certain amount of separation in today’s society between celebrities and the rest of us. A celebrity’s status as a “God-like” creature turns them into an invulnerable statue in the eyes of the general public. It’s easy to think you can throw anything at them and it would have no effect. This is especially apparent when celebrities are used as the butt of jokes — they’re easy targets.

For the majority of people, Kim Kardashian is perceived as a sex icon with a plethora of successful business ventures. But the truth of the matter is that, as awesome as she is, she is also a human woman who feared for her life as she was held at gunpoint and robbed. We need to be more cognizant of the way we trivialize the painful moments of others, even those in places of power.

Yes, celebrities may have achieved more fame than the public could ever imagine, but that doesn’t mean they’re invulnerable.
