Three Minnesota baseball players were recognized Monday for their efforts in the Gophers’ first NCAA tournament run in three years.

Senior shortstop Dan Lyons, sophomore first baseman Bryan Jost and freshman second baseman Derek McCallum all were selected to the 11-man, NCAA Regional All-Tournament team.

The three were bright spots in the tournament for Minnesota, especially in the team’s final game against Fresno State.

Despite falling to the Bulldogs by an 11-6 count Sunday, McCallum went four-for-four with a run batted in against the Bulldogs while Jost went one-for-two with four RBIs. Lyons also drove in an RBI during his final game in a Gophers uniform.

Lyons said the San Diego regional gave Minnesota a chance to battle extremely competitive teams and an opportunity to close out his career on a high note.

“We saw some great pitching throughout the tournament. It was a battle,” he said. “I’m proud of how we played and hopefully it gives Minnesota baseball some well-deserved recognition.”

Lyons, who also made the Big Ten All-Tournament team in both 2006 and 2007, batted .286 during the tournament, while collecting a home run and two RBIs.

Jost led the Gophers with four of the team’s 13 RBIs throughout the tournament. He joins Lyons as the only two Minnesota players to have earned both NCAA and Big Ten All-Tournament status this season.

McCallum finished six-for-ten in the tournament with two RBIs. The offensive highlight for the Gophers came by way of the freshman’s game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th against top-seeded San Diego.
