The Humphrey School of Public Affairs announced Monday that Laura Bloomberg will be its next head dean.

Bloomberg, a current associate dean at Humphrey, will serve a two-year term starting in June, pending Board of Regents approval. She will be the first woman to hold the position.

“I love this school. We are on a great path. We have done fantastic things in recent years and I think we’ve got amazing momentum and I want to be a part of continuing that momentum,” Bloomberg said.

The move comes after current dean Eric Schwartz announced last month he would resign to become president of Refugees International, a refugee advocacy group.

“I think [Bloomberg is] an extraordinary, superb leader who understands the mission of the school and has a broad vision while, at the same time, understands that in order to translate vision into results, you have to roll up your sleeves and work,” Schwartz said.

Bloomberg holds a doctorate in educational policy and administration and a master’s in educational psychology. She has served as associate dean of the Humphrey school since 2013.

As dean, Bloomberg said she hopes to maintain the school’s trajectory by focusing on making a pipeline for students of color and disadvantaged students as well as communicating the school’s research to the public.

Bloomberg’s two-year term will be followed by a national search for a new dean in 2018.

The leadership switch will also include a new associate dean, who is expected to be announced later this week.
