Olympic swimming trials update: Plummer’s dream ends before it starts

Former Gophers swimmer David Plummer saw his Olympic dream shatter Wednesday on the third day of U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Neb.

Plummer finished third in the final of the 100-meter backstroke, clocking in at 52.98 seconds. He needed to place in the top two to travel to London, but Matt Grevers and Nick Thoman beat him to the wall less than a second ahead at 52.08 and 52.86, respectively.

The 100 backstroke was Plummer's only event, and his Olympic trials are over.

Other Gophers swimmers were also in action on day three. Kyler Van Swol placed 20th in the 200 butterfly, just missing the top 16 that moved on to the semifinals. The junior swam to a time of 2:00.48 in the same heat as Michael Phelps. Former Minnesota swimmer Alex Wold tied for 44th in the event at 2:02.07. Brandon Hatanaka took 85th place with a time of 2:03.77. Recent Penn State transfer Luke Bushman finished in 91st place at 2:04.05.

On the women's side, Kiera Janzen had the best finish in the 200 freestyle at 40th place and a time of 2:02.04. Tori Simenec placed 65th and touched the wall in 2:03.52. Lauren Weis followed four spots behind at 2:03.93. Future freshman Laura Votava rounded out the Gophers contingent with a 96th-place time of 2:06.57.
