I was glad to read in Tuesday’s editorial, âÄúGrowing a greener UâÄù, that the University of Minnesota is planning an awareness campaign to promote energy efficiency. I have wondered for years now why we are not encouraged to turn off lights in vacant classrooms. Of course, one would think that intelligent, educated people would do this voluntarily. We did it in the âÄô70s and âÄô80s, why not now? Some of the Folwell classrooms still have the well-worn sticker on the switch-plate reminding users to turn off the lights when not in use. I hope the University will not have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to remind us of what should be a no-brainer. Betsy Kerr University professor
