For the second year in a row, Richard Pitino and his staff were able to secure a top recruit from the state of Minnesota.
Hopkins high school basketball player Amir Coffey committed to the Gophers Monday afternoon, following in the footsteps of his father Richard, who also played college basektball at the University of Minnesota.
Richard Coffey is fourth in Minnesota history in rebounds with 904, and was an All-Big Ten honorable mention at center twice in 1988 and 1989.
The younger Coffey is listed at 6-foot-7, and is rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN.com. Coffey, who may end up as a combo guard for the Gophers, is also listed as the top recruit in Minnesota for the class of 2016 and the 33rd best recruit overall by ESPN.
Coffey also had listed offers from Arizona, Iowa State, Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin according to ESPN, but chose to stay in-state.
