The Gophers men’s and women’s tennis teams concluded their fall season Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The senior doubles pairing Matic Spec and Felix Corwin, and sophomore Stefan Milicevic on the men’s tennis team competed in the ITA Fall Nationals in Indian Wells, California. Corwin and Spec lost in the semifinals in the consolation bracket and Milicevic lost out in the round of 32.
The rest of the men, who did not compete in Nationals, participated in the Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers failed to win the title when duo Jackson Allen and Marino Alpeza came up short in the semifinals against Guillermo Cabrera and William Howells of Notre Dame. However, Allen and Alpeza were the top Gophers finishers in the Invitational, defeating Dartmouth’s David Horneffer and Roko Glasnovic to earn the third place finish in the doubles tournament.
The women’s team won both dual meets in the Big Green Invitational on Friday and Saturday against UMass and Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire.
After winning in the first dual against UMass, the Gophers women’s tennis team battled with Dartmouth. The bottom of the lineup carried the Gophers. Caitlyn Merzbacher, Mehvish Safdar, Cammy Frei and Annemarie Emme all picked up singles victories for Minnesota. The Gophers split the eight single matches and earned victories in three out of four doubles matches to win the dual meet against Dartmouth.
“We faced some good teams, some good competition,” said women’s head coach Catrina Thompson. “For us, we are still getting to know the girls on the team and we are looking forward to the spring season now.”
