Two Minnesota freshmen make junior cross country national team

Adam Zutz and Aaron Bartnik are set for a pretty fun spring break. The freshmen made the junior national team Saturday at the 2012 USA Cross Country Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Both will represent the country March 17 in the 2012 North America, Central American and Caribbean Cross Country Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

The pair placed second and third in the 8k. Zutz ran a time of 24:57.2 while Bartnik followed just behind at 24:57.9.

A volunteer assistant coach for the Minnesota men's team, Chris Rombough, competed at the meet as well in the Open Men's Division. He finished fourth in the 12k to earn a spot on the senior national side. The former Gophers runner completed the course in 36:08.1.

Another Minnesota freshman, Matt Jergenson, also ran the 8k and finished 8th out of 43 competitors. However, his 25:16.8 time was not enough for him to join his teammates in Trinidad.

All four athletes missed this weekend's Iowa State University Classic in Ames, Iowa and FloTrack Husky Invite in Seattle, Wash. They will make their returns to the Gophers next weekend in the Snowshoe Open at home.
