Minnesota’s women’s swimming and diving team ended its season Saturday by cheering on its lone representative in the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.: Julia Quinn.
The Gophers finished sixth in the Big Ten Championships.
Quinn finished 47th in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday and 43rd in the 200 breaststroke Saturday.
Only a sophomore, it was Quinn’s first time competing at NCAAs. She finished fourth in the 200 at Big Tens.
The Gophers now look to next season. Only four swimmers and one diver from this year’s team will have their eligibility expire.
Women’s gym loses
Minnesota’s women’s gymnastics team closed its regular season with a 197.000-194.750 loss Friday to Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
The Gophers were outscored in every event and didn’t have any individual champions. Laura Johnson finished fourth in the all-around with a 39.575.
Howe, Tilstra qualify
Minnesota men’s track and field seniors Bryant Howe and Andy Tilstra both qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet during the second day of competition Sunday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
Howe cleared 7-0 1/2 to win the high jump, and Tilstra marked 167-3 in the discus to place fourth.
Women qualify three
Minnesota’s women’s track and field team had three athletes qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet at the Northridge Invitational in Irvine, Calif., this weekend.
Emily Brown’s mark of 10:40.66 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Ruby Radocaj’s 144-2 in the javelin and Melissa Steele’s 1:00.42 in the 400 hurdles were all good enough for regional berths.
The Gophers as a team won seven events, including senior Darja Vasiljeva’s title in the 3,000.
Softball cut short
Minnesota’s softball team got a no-hitter from freshman Katie Dalen in the first game of the Capital Classic on Friday in Sacramento, Calif. Then it got rained on, and the final two days of the tournament were canceled.
Dalen threw the six-inning gem in an 8-0 win over Rhode Island, and the Gophers beat Kansas 2-1 later in the day Friday.
Minnesota (15-13) was slated to play Brigham Young and Oregon State on Saturday and Portland State on Sunday.
Tennessee beats rowing
Minnesota’s rowing team won the Novice Eight and Varsity Four races but fell in dual competition to No. 10 Tennessee on Saturday at Fort Loudoun Lake in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Gophers have next weekend off before taking on Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, on April 2.
Women’s golf second
Minnesota’s women’s golf team finished second out of 18 teams in the rain-shortened Snowbird Intercollegiate at Pebblecreek Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Fla., on Friday.
The Gophers shot a first-round 309 and trailed Yale by four strokes before rains canceled the remainder of the tournament. Terra Petsinger tied for first place with a 3-over 75.
Men seventh in Georgia
Minnesota’s men’s golf team finished seventh out of 15 teams at the EZ Go Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., this weekend.
The Gophers shot a 22-over 886. Bronson La’Cassie, who led the field entering the final round, shot a 6-over 78 to fall to 11th.
