Friday Music – Maria Isa I was fortunate enough to see Maria perform this spring during Voltage: Fashion Amplified, and trust me, she did not need a bunch of models to amp up the sexy factor. She is bangin’. Even more bangin’ is Maria’s trademark mix of Spanish beats, hometown references, occasional lapses into Spanish, and politically and culturally charged lyrics. Tonight is her CD release show, with guests Muja Messiah, Dance Band and St. Paul Slim. Seriously, go. First Ave. 701 First Ave. N. 8 p.m. Music – Portugal. The Man Portugal. The Man’s most recent album, “Censored Colors” was inspired by The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” and after listening to its songs on their surprisingly visually pleasing MySpace, that’s obvious. This little band that could has released a bunch of albums and tours nonstop; they’ll be playing Lollapalooza in Aug., but right now they’re here at 7th St. and you should definitely check them out, if only to say “I knew them before … ” 7th St. Entry 9 p.m. $5 Tributes – Prince Family Reunion Apparently Prince doesn’t show (duh, he’s too busy going door-to-door as a Jehovah’s Witness), but that’s OK – a lot of his old band members do, and if anyone can play “Little Red Corvette” just like the Purple One, well, it’d be them. They were there, right? Since we love to celebrate our native son Prince Rogers Nelson, the Prince Family Reunion has been going on for awhile, and features members of the Revolution, the New Power Generation, and tons (literally) more. Cabooze, 917 Cedar Ave. S. 8 p.m. $20-25 Music – US Air Guitar Championships Since “Guitar Hero” is soooo popular and you’ve probably spent, oh, six thousand hours figuring it out, here’s your chance to witness brave fakers take those skills (minus the toy guitar) to the stage. Tonight is the Minnesota leg of the 25-city tour of air guitar enthusiasts, who must give the crowd everything they’ve got as they shred on that imaginary Les Paul. Sure, it’s sort of pathetic (learn to play the real guitar if you like it so much), but as Rock Band and Guitar Hero have shown, some people would rather just pretend. It’ll be entertaining for sure; the reigning champ is a chick called Airosol, and she’s looks like a chick Nikki Sixx. Varsity Theatre, 1308 Fourth St. S.E. 8 p.m. $14 21+ Saturday Art- Minneapolis MOSAIC The Twin Cities love art. That’s all there is to it. So with the seventh-annual MOSAIC, we’re celebrating it summer-round. Tonight is the opening-night, and a block party featuring tons of dancers, musicians, and actors will pack the block for the night. There will be ballerinas, drummers, and photography to enjoy, and Midtown Global Market and the farmer’s market will share their foodie wares. Hennepin Ave. & First. Ave. 6 p.m.- 10 p.m., free Music-Black Blondie Black Blondie’s sound wasn’t what I was expecting. For some reason I thought they’d sound like Private Dancer and Gay Witch Abortion, but they really don’t. At all. Rather, vocalist Samahra echoes Amy Winehouse’s gin-soaked wail, while the band fills the sound with soul-driven rhythm. Their debut album, which has garnered fabulous reviews from the Strib and City Pages, “Do You Remember Who You Wanted to Be,” is available now. 501 Club, 501 Washington Ave. S. 9:30 p.m. free Music-Mr. Lif Mr. Lif is a politically/socially-conscious Boston rapper with a new album all about our murky situation of bailouts and recessions. He puts on a dynamo of a show, says City Pages (he was here not too long ago), so the Triple Rock will be the perfect venue to catch Mr. Lif venting over the mic. Triple Rock, 629 Cedar Ave. S. 9 p.m. $10-13 Theater- The Mrs. Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa Pageant Minnesotans love pageants. Or so people think, probably because of the greatest Minnesota-centric pageant movie ever made, “Drop Dead Gorgeous.” Infinitely quotable and applicable to every situation ever, especially those involving flammable swans. And swans is what the candidates at this pageant are hoping to become, because the prize package (this is real, folks, not a play) includes implants, teeth-whitening, and Botox. The winner of the tri-state competition goes on to compete in Tucson. And these are married women, so it’ll probably get ugly. Hopefully no swans eat anyone’s babies. Music-Grizzly Bear Grizzly Bear’s new album “Veckatimest” won over a Grizzly-reluctant skeptic like me, so you know it’s something special. They’re gaining in momentum these days, thanks to kudos from Rolling Stone and a stint as Radiohead’s opening band. They’ll be performing tonight at the Cedar from “Veckatimest,” whose songs sound like harmony kings Crosby, Stills, and Nash meeting up with the dudes in Cream. Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Ave. S. 8 p.m. $16.50 Culture to Consume Eat This Grilling is the best part about summer, no? And it’s fun to see what you can throw on the grill, like your own version of Bobby Flay. This comes to us from ex-A&E writer Ian Power, who filled jalapenos with cream cheese, wrapped them carefully with strips of bacon, and speared them crosswise before grilling them.
