Minnesota’s men’s gymnastics team lost its first dual meet of the season in Columbus, Ohio, to No. 1 Ohio State, 217.100-210.250. The Gophers downed the Buckeyes on floor exercise 34.850-34.100 and matched Ohio State on vault as each team scored a 36.550; however, the Buckeyes took the remaining four events to win the meet.
Junior Guillermo Alvarez was a bright spot for the Gophers as he dominated the floor exercise with a score of 9.450. Alvarez also won the pommel horse title with a mark of 9.650 and was second on vault with a 9.400 and third on the horizontal bar with an 8.750.
Women’s gymnastics
Minnesota’s 17th-ranked women’s gymnastics team was defeated by No. 15 Michigan 194.650-193.975 at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday. The Gophers won two events in their season-opening meet, the beam and the bars, but had to take two falls on floor exercise, which proved to be the difference in the meet .
Individually, junior Carolyn Yernberg was the top performer for the Gophers on vault with a mark of 9.825, while sophomore Laura Johnson had a score of 9.750 to take fourth. The Gophers had three of the top four on bars as senior Mary Skokut captured the individual title with a 9.90 while Johnson and senior Alicia Opsahl tied for third with a 9.825.
