Though the Black Keys’ new track “Fever” was the biggest single splash of yesterday, equally as phenomenal is Chance the Rapper & the Social Experiment’s (his touring band) surprise drop, “Home Studio (Back Up In This Bitch).” It’s raw, unmixed and naught for structure (there are five bar verses and unassuming phrase starting points, which feel purposeful instead of haphazard), and arguably features Chance at his finest. His delivery is delightfully exasperated, as if Chance was victorious in a marathon, panting his thought-out rhymes. The beat makes the listener yen for the lush horn orchestrations and bottom heavy funk of jazz-fusion great Donald Byrd and the prominent organ-esque synthesizer is the love child between the Stax Records vault and the ethereally chill Washed Out. No James Blake (Chance’s current roommate) influences are evident here; “Home Studio” is pure, un-gelded Chance who gave us the “10 Day” mixtape.
