Just like the Bison Open , Gophers wrestlers are again on their own as they head to the Kaufman-Brand Open hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha. SaturdayâÄôs tournament boasts a wide range of wrestlers from Division I and II schools from across the nation. âÄúThe tournament itself is the largest one-day college tournament in the country,âÄù assistant head coach Joe Russell said. But these wrestlers will not represent their schools. Minnesota wrestlers are going âÄúunattachedâÄù for the Saturday tournament, competing individually with only the coaching of each other. âÄúItâÄôs a real good one for building team unity and the guys are coaching each other and kind of fighting for each other in a positive way,âÄù Russell said. âÄúThatâÄôs good, a little adversity earlier in the year. They got to drive down there on their own, find their own place to stay, get their own meals. It really is totally on their own,âÄù Russell said. Speaking of adversity, the Gophers will face the stiff competition of the host Mavericks, coached by Mike Denney, father of Minnesota soccer coach Mikki Denney Wright , and ranked No. 1 in Division II wrestling.
