The new ice-skating rink built in the Milwaukee Road Depot in downtown Minneapolis opened its doors to the public Monday.
Located at Washington Avenue and Third Avenue South, the rink is encased in glass under the roof of the 600-foot-long train shed, allowing the original steel structure to remain visible.
The Minnesota Historical Society rescued the depot from demolition when it placed the depot on the National Register of Historic Places.
The 85-by-200-foot ice rink occupies only part of the depot; the rest is being developed into a hotel complex.
The rink is open to the public for skating every day of the week, and memberships lasting from Dec. 4 through Mar. 4 are available.
