Sophomore Kyler Van Swol has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after his performance at the Minneapolis Grand Prix this past weekend.
Van Swol qualified for the Olympic trials with a time of of 53.91 in the 100-meter butterfly. His time is the top time for a collegiate athlete in the nation this year. Van Swol finished sixth in the event; Michael Phelps finished first.
He also qualified for the Olympic trials in the 200-meter butterfly.
Van Swol was part of the 400-meter freestyle relay team that placed first (3:26.59) and the 800-meter freestyle relay team that placed third (7:41.02).
This is the first time he has earned this honor. The last Gopher swimmer to do so was Michael Richards in January of this year.
