Beware expatriates interested in renouncing the U.S.
The price to renounce a U.S. citizenship just went up from nothing to $450 Thursday according to the Star Tribune. The State Department said that it has decided that “the renunciant should pay this fee at the visit during which he or she swears the oath of renunciation.”
Prices across the board for U.S. citizenship and passports rose. The application fee for a passport went up by 27 percent— now at $70. Passport security surcharge doubled to $40 dollars. Even adding extra pages to your passport book will cost $82— previously this cost nothing.
Also, overseas birth registration of an American child went from $65 to $100.
