Stranded dolphin died Friday in poluted Gowanus Canal near Brooklyn according to the Associated Press.
USA Today reported that the police and marine mammal rescuers' plan was to wait and see if the dolphin would swim out of the canal at high tide around 7:10 p.m.
USA Today reported that the dolphin was, "bleeding from a wound to its dorsal fin." The dolphin died before high tide, according to the Associated Press.
NBC News reported that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency declared the area a Superfund site in 2010, "because it contained a 'century's worth' of pollutants."
As a Superfund site, "the government can force polluters to pay for its restoration," according to the Associated Press. Coal, chemical, and fuel runoff have been polluting the Gowanus Canal for over 100 years.
"'It's not safe for us to get people in the water,'"Robert DiGiovanni, senior biologist at the Riverhead Foundation said to the NY Daily News in response to the inaction of police and marine mammal rescuers.
