In a press release by Gophersports, the University of Minnesota announced the addition of Texas and Navy to the Minnesota football non-conference schedule.
Texas joins North Carolina as non-conference opponents with ties to Gophers head coach Tim Brewster. Brewster worked under then Tarheels head coach Mack Brown, and joined Brown in 1998 when Brown left the Tarheels to become head coach at Texas.
The Longhorns will face Minnesota in a home-and-home series beginning 2015, with Texas travelling to TCF Bank Stadium to face the Gophers on Sept. 19, 2015. Minnesota will then travel to Texas the following year and play the Longhorns in Darrell K. Royal Stadium on Sept. 17, 2016.
When the Gophers and Longhorns play on 2015, it will be just the second ever meeting between the schools, and the first in nearly 80 years. The only previous game between the two programs was played in 1936, with Minnesota emerging victorious 47-19.
Minnesota also announced plans to play Navy in a home-and-home series for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Exact dates have not yet been released.
Here is the statement by Brewster regarding the addition of Texas and Navy to the Gophers non-conference schedule:
“It’s another great opportunity to help ourselves, facing two great teams like Texas and Navy,” Brewster said. “It creates tremendous excitement with our fan base, our players and in recruiting. We’re thrilled to death to announce that we’re going to play two quality opponents like the University of Texas and the United States Naval Academy.”
In a related scheduling note, Minnesota added Indiana State as its final non-conference opponent for the 2016 season. With that addition, the Gophers now have its entire non-conference schedule set through the 2016 season, with the exception of 2012, which still has one non-conference game open.
