A pair of University student-athletes will attend a highly selective NCAA forum next month in Indianapolis.

Jennifer Larrick, who will be a redshirt junior on the soccer team, and Katherine Windsor, a senior on the rowing team, will represent the University at the NCAA’s Career in Sports Forum.

Larrick and Windsor were among 200 student-athletes selected from a pool of more than 1,100 applicants. This is the first time Gophers athletes have been selected to the forum, according to the University.

The forum gives student-athletes a chance to learn about careers in athletics and also offers them an opportunity to network with current professionals in the business.

It will take place June 5-8 at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis. The NCAA covers the student-athletes’ cost of attendance.

Larrick applied for the forum in March, after assistant athletic director Peyton Owens III suggested that she apply. She said the forum appealed to her because she wants to become a college soccer coach.

“At first that was kind of just like the fallback,” she said of coaching, noting that she hoped to pursue a professional soccer career, “but as I’ve studied more, I’ve become more passionate about it.”

Windsor got an email from Owens earlier this year saying that she had been nominated to apply to the forum.

“I thought it was going to be a good opportunity to better myself [to] … further my career down the line,” she said.

Windsor will graduate this month with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and then will pursue a master’s degree in education at the University. She said she would like to teach and coach for a while, then gradually work her way back into intercollegiate athletics.

She also said she hopes to someday start a nonprofit to make sure all kids can play sports if they choose.

“I’ve seen, in my life, what athletics can do in terms of character development and teaching life skills,” Windsor said. “I would love to find a way to make that possible.”
