Friday Film – Bollywood’s “New York” This Bollywood film premiers at the Oak St. the same night it premiers in Mumbai âÄì weird. “New York” is the story of a young Indian man who travels to New York to visit friends and soon it becomes a thrill-ride sprawling all over the city. A top-notch cast and crew created “New York,” including Katrina Kaif, who is the most-searched Indian celebrity on Google. Bollywood in America is on the rise. Oak St. Cinema, 309 Oak St. S.E. 7:30 p.m. $10 Party – Uptown Pride Block Party Of course there are tons of parties during Pride Week, and the Uptown Pride Block party, sponsored by the the Bryant-Lake Bowl, promises to be one of the best. With music from Black Blondie, Dykes Do Drag, and Sick of Sarah, among others, the Pride Block Party will be, well, a gay old time! Bryant Lake Bowl Theater, 810 Lake St. W. 6 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Party – “Purple Rain” Sing-Along/Costume Contest Yeah, yeah, yeah, Minnesotans are obsessed with Prince, maybe more so than they are with fellow native son Bobby Zimmerman, who seems to shun his Iron Range upbringing. Prince, however, embraces his MPLS heritage, naming his latest record “MPLSound.” So the folks at First Ave. honor the Purple One with this sing-Along/costume contest based off Prince’s seminal ’80s biopic, “Purple Rain.” Dress like Prince to win prizes, and watch the film afterwards with provided lyric sheets. First Avenue, 701 First Ave. N. 8 p.m. $3 Music – Rancid “There was this grungy kid at my school who only wore Rancid tshirts,” said my roommate Amy when we began to discuss the band. “The kids at my school who wore Rancid shirts were the skaters,” countered my other roommate Brett. Well, either way, the band is back again with a new album, “Let the Dominoes Fall,” and should find a welcoming crowd at the Myth in Maplewood. Myth Maplewood, 3090 Southlawn Dr. 6:30 p.m. $30-35 Music – Gospel Gossip Record Release with Lookbook, Black Horse Gospel Gossip is quickly becoming one of the Twin Cities’ most recognized local bands, gaining in momentum the more they perform. Tonight at the Turf Club, the band will release their new record, “Dreamland,” with the help of Lookbook, Brooklyn’s Black Horse, and Mute Era. The Gossips sound a bit like Karen O fronting a shoegaze band. They’ll be touring the country in support of the record after their Turf Club gig, so keep your eyes peeled as the band gains notice. Turf Club, 1601 University Ave. St. Paul 9 p.m. Tickets TBA Saturday Shopping – MNFashion Garage Sale MNFashion, the folks behind Voltage: Fashion Amplified, are having a garage sale! And not just any garage sale full of old-ass Tupperware and baby clothes, but a really chic one with Louboutins, a dress form, coffee-table books, sewing supplies, cool housewares, and merchandise from founder Anna Lee’s Ruby3 line. All the proceeds benefit the organization, which strives to give Minnesota designers the support and visibility they need. Shelter Studios, 2212 Broadway St. N.E., Suite 150 8 a.m. âÄì 4 p.m. Pride – Dirty Queer Show These Pride events really know how to put on a fabulous, can’t-miss-it show, and the Dirty Queer Show can add itself to that esteemed list. Until 8 p.m., one can see local gay-themed art, cabaret ’til 10, and then dancing all night with two DJs. And for only $5, it’s a steal, so hop over to the West Bank in your best dancin’ shoes. BedlamTheater, 1501 6th St. S. 5 p.m. $5 Pride – 2009 Pride Festival GLBT Pride Week dominates the Culture Compass this weekend, and for good reason: it’s going to be fun! What’s more fun than celebrating love? With concerts, beer gardens, tons of food vendors and art exhibitors, this event only gets more momentous when its mass commitment ceremony arrives at 2 p.m. Sunday. Loring Park, 1382 Willow St. Continues to Sun. 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Free; Beer gardens: $5/day Music – The Avett Brothers The Avett Brothers are right on the verge of hugeness, some might say. They have a Rick Rubin-produced album coming out in August, which may or may not catapult the alt-country/acoustic punk bluegrass (what a mouthful) North Carolina residents to a certain degree of fame. They’re the second installment in Sue Mclean’s Music in the Zoo (2004 throwbacks Los Lonely Boys were the first), which runs through the end of the summer. MN Zoo Weesner Amphitheater, 13000 Zoo Blvd. Apple Valley 7:30 p.m. $25 Film – “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” Roger Rabbit really freaked me out as a kid. I don’t think I ever got through it. Maybe I would as an adult watching it at midnight at the Uptown, but I’m not 100% confident. Anyway, the half-cartoon/half-reality Disney ’80s comedy screens as the theater’s standby Saturday midnight movie, so if you’re not worn out from Pride activities or not too jazzed about dancing all night, perhaps this is the venue for you. Jessica Rabbit is kinda hot, anyway. Uptown Theater 12 a.m. Sunday Pride – Pride Parade R.T. Rybak is the coolest mayor ever. He stage dives, he works hard to make Minneapolis the greatest city it can be and he is a huge proponent of gay rights. He’ll walk in the Pride Parade today, which drew 125,000 spectators last year. R.T. said it’s the largest parade in Minneapolis and one of the largest in the Midwest. Hennepin Ave., Downtown 9 a.m. (pre-parade show), 11 a.m. (parade) Post-Pride – Stuff to Do After the parade, why not hang out in Loring Park, or perhaps stop in to nearby bars Nick & Eddie, Joe’s Garage, or Bar Lurcat? You’ll probably see Scott Seekins – he’s wearing white. Or, since it’s Sunday, it’s 18+ night at the Gay ’90s, and that’ll be crazy fun for sure. If you feel romantic, go watch the commitment ceremonies, which begin at 2 p.m., and wish the couples well. Aw âĦ Bar Fun – Chuck & Sean’s Trivia I always feel bad for “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, because I don’t think he gets invited to too many trivia parties. Rest assured that Trebek won’t be at Chuck & Sean’s ultra-popular trivia night, but lots of other buffs will. The game night fills up fast due to its first prize of a $20 bar tab/$45 salon tab at Jon Oulman Salon. Go with your friends, make a super-team and have a few beers. 331 Club, 331 13th Ave N.E. Pride – Saloon Block Party Since the Saloon is one of the Twin Cities’ premier gay hotspots, expect a raging dance-all-night party packed with lots of superfun DJs and musical artists like Jody Watley. According to its creators, the party gets packed quickly, so if you’re in the market for a night of lots of hot gay boys shakin’ it to Shakira and Beyonce, get there early! 830 Hennepin Ave. 2 p.m. – 3 AM, $15 Culture to Consume Listen to This: Phoenix packed the Varsity Tuesday night, and before the show they stopped to hang out with Mary Lucia at the Current studio. Listen to this if only to hear their adorable French accents. They do a killer cover of Air’s “Playground Love,” which makes sense since frontman Thomas Mars is Sofia Coppola’s babydaddy. Eat This: It’s freezie-pop season, my little summer darlings! Remember how you used to fight with your siblings over the blue Mr. Freeze popsicles, or wait in anticipation for the sugary juice to freeze so you could eat âÄòtil your mouth turned colors? You can still do that now – no shame. Get the Flavr-Ice box with like, 500 popsicles, for maximum pleasure, and you can probably figure out how to make them boozy if you’re clever enough. Drink This: WATER. It’s really hot. Keep yourself hydrated! And if you don’t exactly love the taste of water, like a certain editor of mine, then squeeze a lemon or lime into it, or use one of those Crystal Light packets. But when it’s 90 degrees and you don’t have AC, drinking over your 8 glasses a day is a must. The MPLS water system ain’t that bad. Watch This: It’s probably going to re-run a thousand times, but the latest episode of “Jon and Kate Plus 8” will still break my heart. I invested so much time into the family, only to have it broken apart! How upsetting, for real. Anyway, tune in to TLC to watch the “one hour special,” in which the kids are adorable in their new $7,000 Crooked Houses, Kate is visibly upset and Jon is a giant douchebag. Another thing to watch is the leaked trailer for the highly-anticipated-among-the-fashion-set documentary, “The September Issue.” The documentary focuses on “Vogue”‘s hugely important September fashion issue, with lots of dish on EIC Anna Wintour and her coworkers.
