With two big wins over Iowa on Friday night, the menâÄôs and womenâÄôs swimming and diving teams brought perfect records into SaturdayâÄôs match-up with North Carolina. But the Tarheels proved to be too much for Minnesota, giving both teams their first losses of the season. âÄú[A team] wouldnâÄôt choose to have their toughest dual-meet the Saturday âÄî noon âÄî after having a good meet the night before,âÄù menâÄôs head coach Dennis Dale said. âÄúBut our guys responded. Especially as the meet went on, they got better and better.âÄù Coming off a successful border-battle with Wisconsin last weekend, the Gophers dominated Iowa on Friday night, with the menâÄôs team cruising to a 177-119 victory and the womenâÄôs team winning a 180-114. But the back-to-back duals took its toll on the Gophers, who had less than 19 hours between Friday and SaturdayâÄôs meet, a challenge the menâÄôs team hadnâÄôt faced yet this season. âÄúThe first time you swim back-to-back days, it requires a little character,âÄù Dale said. âÄúBut then [the swimmers and divers] start getting a little more familiar with it and do a little better job.âÄù Taking 12 of 16 events against Iowa on Friday, the men fell to North Carolina 135-165, while the womenâÄôs 146-154 loss came down to the dayâÄôs last event. âÄúOn paper, coming into this meet, we were definitely the underdogs,âÄù womenâÄôs co-head coach Terry Nieszner said. âÄúComing down to the last relay is what makes college dual meets fun and exciting. It was great.âÄù It was an especially successful weekend for the GophersâÄô seniors, as Ivan Gutesa âÄî this weekâÄôs Big Ten Swimmer of the Week âÄî picked up four big wins, leaving him undefeated in the breaststroke events. Senior Jillian Tyler notched two first-places finishes for the women âÄî picking up victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events against North Carolina. âÄúThings have been going really well, IâÄôve been training really hard,âÄù Tyler said. âÄúIâÄôm in a good place mentally and physically, I think IâÄôm in the best shape of my life right now.âÄù
