UPDATE: SUSPECT IN GRADUATE HOTEL STANDOFF IS IN CUSTODY, POLICE SAY (1:43 p.m.)
The standoff at the Graduate Hotel in Stadium Village entered the 36-hour mark shortly after noon on Tuesday, as police have fired gas into the suspect’s room.
Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, KSTP reported that a person threw what appears to be a microwave out the window. Members of a SWAT team then fired gas into the sixth-floor window.
At 11:30 a.m., an officer used a long stick to clear out debris from the window where the suspect is currently stationed. At around 11:40 a.m., a person was seen looking out the window.
Officers have been on the scene since around midnight Sunday, Minneapolis Police spokesperson Scott Seroka said, adding there would be more information once a resolution was reached with the individual inside.
Police say the suspect has refused to leave the room after they attempted to serve an arrest warrant against him for an Arizona-based white-collar felony.
At 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Seroka said the MPD hopes to have an update soon, but it would not be within the hour.
At 8:30 p.m. on Monday, a woman was released from the room unharmed and has been cooperating with investigators, University spokesperson Chuck Tombarge said.
Currently, the Recreation and Wellness Center, Scholars Walk, Beacon Street Southeast between Harvard and Walnut Streets and the parking lot north of the hotel are still closed. The rest of East Bank is open, according to an email sent to the University community.
The University community was alerted of the incident at around 5:50 a.m. Monday morning when texts and calls were sent out warning individuals of a “public safety incident” at the Graduate Hotel.
