Brooks Jackson, one of the University of Minnesota’s highest ranking administrators, is leaving for the University of Iowa. 

Jackson, dean of the University’s medical school and vice president of health sciences, was named dean of the University of Iowa’s medical school and vice president of the academic health center today, pending the University of Iowa Board of Regents’ approval. 

“The position Brooks leaves behind is a critical role for the University of Minnesota, and I am working closely with the Board of Regents, the Medical School, and the Academic Health Center on our transition plan. I will send updates in the near future,” said University President Eric Kaler in an emailed statement sent to staff and faculty. “In the meantime, I thank Dr. Jackson for his leadership and service to the University of Minnesota.”

Jackson is set to assume his role on Nov. 30. 

One of two finalists for the position, Jackson has been dean of the University’s medical school since 2014. He also serves as a professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

Jackson is set to receive a raise from the University of Iowa with a base annual salary of $825,000. At the University of Minnesota, his salary was $750,411.

His leadership and experience was lauded in a University of Iowa press release.

“Dr. Jackson is an experienced and innovative leader who can lead University of Iowa Health Care in continued success,” said University of Iowa President J. Bruce Harreld in a press release. “He has a proven track record of building research, education, and clinical programs, and he will bring his great passion and talent here to Iowa.”

Before his time as dean at the University, Jackson headed John Hopkins’ School of Medicine.

At the time of his hiring, Kaler said Jackson was set to enhance the medical school’s stature. “[Jackson] also has the skills, the experience, the intellect, the determination and the reputation to enhance the national standing of our medical school and lead the AHC.”
