Protesters were blocked from a post-election discussion event at McNamara Alumni Center Thursday evening.

University of Minnesota Police Department Chief Matt Clark ordered officers to bar the doors to McNamara, where Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., held a post-election discussion along with Humphrey School of Public Affairs Dean Eric Schwartz.

About 30 protesters gathered before the 6 p.m. event and marched around the center to try and raise awareness about immigrant family detention centers in the U.S.

Some ticket-holders were prevented from entering by Clark and other officers, even after a large group of protesters left.

Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee Member Adriana Cerrillo was able to enter the event, but was blocked from reentering when she stepped out to consult with other protesters, who wanted to enter the event and ask Klobuchar about her stance toward detention centers.Cerillo said the issue is especially relevant given the results of Tuesday’s election. “These are scary times for the nation.”

The centers have poor living conditions and Klobuchar refused to join over 40 other legislators by signing a letter asking President Obama to end the centers, said Kathleen Ganley, University Spanish instructor and member of MIRAC.

“Klobuchar, stand up!” Protesters chanted as they held signs to the windows looking into the event.

The police blockade kept out not only protesters, but other ticket-holders as well. Some of those turned away grew frustrated with both police and protesters at the scene.
