FridayâÄôs opening of the play âÄúA Bright Room Called Day,âÄù presented by the University of Minnesota Theatre Department, kicks off a collaboration with the Guthrie Theatre for the 2009 Kushner Celebration. The play, written by Pulitzer-prize award winning playwright Tony Kushner, follows Agnes Eggling, a middle-aged actress in 1930s pre-Nazi Berlin, and Zillah, a young woman frustrated with the governing Republican Party and determined to move to Berlin in the 1980s. âÄúA Bright Room Called DayâÄù is KushnerâÄôs first play. Kushner won the 1993 Pulitzer and Tony awards for his play, âÄúAngels in America: Millennium Approaches.âÄù The 2009 Kushner Celebration will also see three more plays by the author performed on all three stages at the Guthrie. The shows are: âÄúTiny Kushner,âÄù which will be an evening of one-acts, his musical âÄúCaroline, or Change,âÄù and a new work commissioned by the Guthrie, âÄúThe Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures.âÄù Tickets for âÄúA Bright Room Called DayâÄù are available at the University Theatre box office, or by calling 612-624-2345.
