Graduated Minnesota baseball third baseman David Hrncirik was named second-team All-Mideast Region on Monday by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Hrncirik was also a first-team All-Big Ten selection this season, batting .332 with 38 runs, 29 RBI and 29 stolen bases. His steals were the most at Minnesota since Charlie Nelson stole a school-record 43 in 1994.
Hrncirik was a third-team All-Big Ten selection last season.
Delac, Cerensek swim
Minnesota men’s swimmers Igor Cerensek and Mario Delac swam for their native Croatia this weekend at the Mediterranean Games in Almeria, Spain.
Both swam legs in both the 4×100-meter and 4×200 freestyle relays, with both relays finishing fifth. Delac also swam the 50, 100 and 200 free, and Cerensek also swam the 200 free.
Both will swim for the United States in the World University Games this August in Turkey.
Mortimer, Silkaitis, too
Graduated men’s swimmers Justin Mortimer and Terry Silkaitis swam at the Santa Clara Invitational during the weekend in California.
Mortimer took third in the 1,500 free Sunday, the 400 free Saturday and the 800 free Thursday. He also finished 19th in the 200 free Friday.
Silkaitis was 22nd in the 100 free Sunday, 54th in the 100 butterfly and 19th in the 50 free Saturday, and 19th in the 100 breaststroke Friday.
Women’s swim schedule
Minnesota’s women’s swimming and diving team announced its schedule Monday. The Gophers open their season earlier with the alumni meet Sept. 23 and their first regular meet Oct. 8 at Kansas.
Minnesota will play host to the Quad Duals on Jan. 27-28, competing against Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin. The Big Ten Championships are at Ohio State.
Whalen player of week
Former Minnesota women’s basketball player Lindsay Whalen was named WNBA player of the week Monday.
Whalen led the Connecticut Sun to three wins in four games on a West Coast trip. She averaged 15 points in the four games and scored a career-high 20 in Saturday’s game at Phoenix. Whalen sits third in the league in assists at 5.7 per game and averages 11.0 points.
