The Gophers weekend was highlighted by freshman Vlad Lobak’s first career doubles victory on Sunday.
With his partner, Eli Ogilvy, the pair won 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles spot and finished off the sweep in the doubles portion of the match.
Minnesota (6-3, 1-0) defeated Penn University (4-7) 6-1 on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers ended the weekend 2-0 after beating Drake on Friday.
Minnesota took the doubles point for the second time on the weekend. No. 58 Felix Corwin and Matic Spec moved to 4-2 on the season after winning both of their matches on the weekend.
“I’m always happy to see the doubles to go well, we put a new guy in doubles with Vlad Lobak and he did really well,” Young said. “I thought the whole weekend, the lower half of the lineup is finding their game.”
Minnesota swept the doubles portion to start the match out against Penn. Corwin and Spec made quick work of their opponents in the No. 1 spot winning 6-1. Justyn Levin and Josip Krstanovic clinched the doubles point for the second time on the weekend winning 6-2.
“That win was really important to me because it was my first doubles and I really liked playing in this atmosphere,” Lobak said.
The Gophers continued their fast start in the singles portion of the match. Jackson Allen captured a straight set victory — 6-4, 6-1 — for the Gophers’ first win during singles.
Krstanovic earned his second victory of the weekend by beating his opponent 6-4, 6-0. Corwin and Spec both finished their straight set victories close to the same time. Corwin won 6-2, 6-2 and Spec won 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot.
Stefan Milicevic dropped a three-set match for Minnesota’s lone loss of the weekend.
Minnesota sweeps Drake 7-0 on Friday
Ogilvy clinched the 7-0 victory for the Gophers from the No. 4 singles spot versus Drake.
“We know Drake is a really good team so we knew we were going to have a tough match,” Ogilvy said. “To clinch the match is always nice because it relieves the pressure for the other guys in the rest of their games.”
The Gophers jumped out to an early lead after capturing the doubles point.
Spec and Corwin quickly beat their opponent in the No. 1 singles spot 6-2 before Krstanovic and Levin clinched the doubles point. Levin and Krstanovic pulled off a 7-5 victory in the No. 2 doubles spot, letting out a yell after the winning point.
Krstanovic built off the momentum he created after winning the doubles point, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 singles spot. Corwin, from the No. 1 spot, cruised to a straight set victory as well — 6-1, 6-1. Ogilvy won the clinching match 6-2, 6-2.
