Minnesota’s baseball team fell to Northern Iowa for the second-consecutive year Wednesday at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, Iowa, losing a 2-0 decision and its six-game winning streak.
The Gophers (11-12, 4-0 Big Ten) got six scoreless innings from sophomore starting pitcher Marcus McKenzie, who gave up two hits and had six strikeouts.
But the Panthers (13-14) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a double to left centerfield by Patrick Moran.
Minnesota managed just five hits and was shut out for the first time in 71 games.
Of the little offense the Gophers did produce, senior third baseman David Hrncirik went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Shortstop Matt Fornasiere also extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Rowing earns first rank
Minnesota’s rowing team was ranked in the College Rowing Coaches Association top-20 poll for the first time in program history Wednesday.
The Gophers sit 19th after defeating then-No. 15 Iowa on Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa.
Wilson in Drake Hall
Minnesota men’s track and field coach Gary Wilson will be named to the Drake Relays Coaches Hall of Fame on April 28 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The ceremony will be held at the Knapp Center with a social set for 7 p.m. and the induction at 7:30 p.m.
Mortimer third at trials
Minnesota men’s swimming and diving senior Justin Mortimer finished third in the 800-meter freestyle on the final day of the World Swimming Championships Trials in Indianapolis. He ended the meet as the third-highest overall point scorer.
He swam the 800 free in a time of 8:05.78. He’s also finished third in the 500 free and the 1,650 free and fifth in the 400 individual medley.
