Minnesota’s women’s swimming and diving team announced the signings of eight athletes to its 2005-06 recruiting class Wednesday.
The Gophers signed Jenny Shaughnessy of Rochester, Minn.; Meredith McCarthy of The Woodlands, Texas; Erin Holtmeyer of Omaha, Neb.; Christine Jennings of Longmont, Colo.; Linzey Bachmeier of Mandan, N.D.; Danielle Ridder of St. Louis; Kait Strickland of North Berwick, Maine; and Katie Brosseau of Springfield, Mo., to NCAA national letters of intent.
Shaughnessy, the Gophers local swimming recruit from John Marshall High School, was a five-time NISCA All-American. She enters her senior season as a three-time Minnesota State High School League champion in the 200 individual medley (2002 and 2003) and the 100 freestyle (2003).
Women’s gym signs trio
Minnesota’s women’s gymnastics team announced the signing of Jade Beattie of Bismarck, N.D.; Carmelina Carabajal of Albuquerque, N.M.; and Nouel Cason of Reno, Nev., on Wednesday.
Beattie has competed several times at the Junior Olympic Level 10 Nationals and placed 16th on both the vault and bars.
Carabajal has won her Junior Olympic state title four times.
Cason competes for the Flips USA Gymnastics Club in Reno. She placed second on the beam and vault at her level-10 state meet.
Women’s track signs one
Minnesota women’s track and field coach Gary Wilson announced the signing of Heather Dorniden of Rosemount, Minn., on Wednesday.
Dorniden is the defending state 400-meter champion and clocked a personal best of 55.29 at the state meet.
“Heather is a perfect fit for our program,” Wilson said in a statement. “I consider her to be one of the top recruits in the state of Minnesota and believe she will make an immediate contribution to our team’s success.”
